"Thriller" in the Philippine Prison System

Thanks to Connor for pointing me to a YouTube video about how inmates in a Philippine prison get their daily exercise, set to American music and dance:

The prison does a few other numbers, including "Souljaboy" and "The Hustle".

Three Million Web Pages with Malicious "Drive-By" Downloads

These suck.

As described by Windows ITPro Magazine, a "Drive By" download is:

a situation in which a computer becomes infected with some sort of malware when its user simply visits a Web page. Such infections typically take advantage of vulnerabilities in browsers, browser components (typically add-ons), and OSs.

This means you can get infected by simply visiting the page, or via a pop-up redirect from a malicious page. A team

The key points: "vulnerabilities in browsers, browser components and OSs". Legitimate software companies and application developers will issue security patches for detected vulnerabilities to ensure their code is secure.

Patch your systems, people. There is no excuse except to maintain a safe computing environment.

Phone Phishing Scam in the Wild

I posted "Subjunctive Identity Theft .. From American Express?" back in September.

In the post, I detailed a reality where a cardholder would respond to a phone call or voice mail and start talking with someone on the other line whose first question was "what is your account number?"

Gawd.

While my interaction with American Express was legitimate, Netcraft reports the scam is out there in "Fraudster using phone numbers to receive authentication details".
