Voice-over-IP (VOIP) communications on cell phones have been a looming concern for carriers as users would no longer need to burn airtime to make calls. Further, international calls (typically with expensive rates) are suddenly “free” to these.
The iPhone is the first to make this carrier concern a reality via Skype.
The free price comes without the freedom of movement, however: the iPhone will not allow VOIP calls over a cellular data connection; Wi-Fi connections only. Still, the opportunity to call foreign countries from the comfort of your Wi-Fi-enabled house or coffee shop are a very interesting proposition.
