My Mobile Phone Tech Refresh

Regular readers know that I loved my Treo 700W ("I LOVE my Treo 700w - Part 1" and "I LOVE my Treo 700w - Part 2".

Well, that and these Live Search results of 700W on OpsanBlog.

However, the time had come to update my mobile phone-i-ness.  At the least, I wanted a faster processor, additional network access and a few other bits and pieces.

Our Verizon representative suggested the Samsung SCH-i760 and so far, so good.

The device is powered by Windows Mobile 6, and comes loaded with Microsoft Office Mobile, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. As with my prior device, I can stay connected most of my email accounts with Mobile Outlook.

The device is a bit bigger than the Treo, but includes a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a numeric dial pad on the front of the device.

Some quick coolness, from my perspective (some OS, some device):

  • Did I mention a faster processor?  This one is quite speedy, loading client applications at the speed of light.
  • The taller screen (compared to the square screen on the Treo) makes more data available at a glance.
  • Did I say taller?  It's also wider, as when the keyboard is extended, the screen goes from portrait to landscape.
  • Outlook Mobile now displays HTML formatting in email messages.
  • Outlook Mobile now provides Global Address List (GAL) lookup functionality (previous versions required you to respond to a message to glean a recipient address).

Some things that need work (some OS, some device):

  • The lack of T9 text input functions whilst in keypad mode.  Yes, the WM enhanced word completion functions, but the first few characters must be entered in the multiple-press mode. For example, 'mom' is spelled as 6, right-navigation wheel, 666, right-navigation wheel and 6.  With T9, it would be 666.
  • The lack of shortcut letters (the underlined letters when a menu is exposed) while in keypad mode.
  • Too many buttons.  I'm constantly disconnecting people.
  • Changes in the soft labels.  Took me some time to get used to the changes.
  • Lack of JavaScript support in the browser.  We need to fix this.

So, long story short: I'm happy with the upgrade, but I don't love the device quite yet.  As I become more expert, I'll post updates.

Nice device but I think that Nokia is better (even E61), and new devices is already announced with a qwerty keyboard. Look in this way. And certainly reliability of Nokia!!!!
