    The 'silent' ring tone

I posted “'Silent' (to adults) Ring Tone” the other day, talking about a ring tone the teens are using that the adults cannot hear.

I found an MP3 of the ringtone on NPR: http://download.npr.org/anon.npr-mp3/atc/atc_teenbuzz.mp3.

I can hear it, in fact, it's quite annoying.

Maybe, maybe, maybe .. we (adults) tell our kids we can't hear it.

I'M OLD!!! I can't hear it:-( My sisters and kids all freaked out and plugged their ears when I played it and I couldn't hear a thing. How depressing!! I do think that a whole class of kids frantically plugging their ears in pain from this ring would definitely tip off a teacher:-)

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 6/28/2006 2:29 PM MEGA MAN

Where did they get? and how?

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 6/28/2006 2:35 PM BS

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 7/5/2006 11:08 AM Mackenzi

I just played the tone and I'm 17 and I could hear it, I asked my mom who is going on 50, if she could hear it...she said no...kinda cool I think!

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 8/2/2006 7:01 AM Chris

I'm 36 and I could hear it, which I was quite surprised at. The Physics behind the "silent" r-tone is quite simple - the older we get the less we can hear higher frequency sounds. This is the same principle used in the "mosquito" which which uses a high frequency tone to deter scallies from hanging around outside shops etc. They find the tone painful but we adults can't hear it!

    Where can i get it?

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/7/2006 3:14 PM Kim

I'm fifteen and I heard it. I hurts though. Even though a classroom of kids might cover their ears, it can be just mistaken for something else. a lot of items squelch like that....at least in my school. The desks squeek, the air conditioner squeeks, the doors squeek, some of them pretty high pitch too,

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/7/2006 6:36 PM Mouse

YEA this ringtone really works. Its annoying but its hot. i tried it on some adults but they couldn't hear nothin'.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/14/2006 5:26 PM Lori

I can hear it just fine and I'm 43. By the way, my cat heard it too and she was looking all over trying to figure out where it was coming from.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/15/2006 3:29 PM Brett

This is like the 'dog whistle' only it's the 'Teenager Whistle', dogs and cats can hear further than teenagers but teengers can hear further than adults.

If it is not working on your computer, put the sound really low.

Martinez, you can't stop it now, you need a hearing aid even if your ears are great!

For UK users, use your GPRS mobile internet and go on www.buzzed.co.uk. You can get a day-pass and download as much as you want for 1 day (bookmark the page). I believe that this is called 'No Adults'.

Vibration is not a good idea, if it is touching anything, you may get a loud noise.

Thanks! For more information contact me here: boneaparte@googlemail.com

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/23/2006 9:49 PM Alex

i heard that just fine and im 16. There's another ringtone going around that im trying to find also, its a much higher frequency and i couldnt hear it as well.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/24/2006 1:40 AM Lauren

when i play it on my computer its great but when i connecti t to my phone it doesnt work it goes really low sound tat everyone can hear can it be fixed?

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/24/2006 9:33 PM Linde

I'm 46 and I played it 3 times to make sure - I definitely don't hear it. I've never listened to loud music but I have played in musical groups for 35 years so my hearing has probably been affected by more than just age and loud household appliances.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/25/2006 6:54 AM Nick

Well I'm 33 and I just uploaded this "silent" ring tone onto my Nokia 6235 and I can hear it as clear as a bell. Maybe my hearings a lot better than I thought it was or I'm just not old enough yet. I also just had a look over on a ring tone sellers site (one that has a thing for crazy this and crazy that) and there are several different tones there. 16Khz, 17Khz, 18Khz and one called mosquito. 18Khz was practically inaudible to me but the others were quite audible (and painful).

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/25/2006 3:58 PM brittany

You want to know what's sad...I'm 18 and I can't hear it unless I turn it up all the way on my coputer...and even then it only sounds like a slight buzzing sound. My room mate who is 19 grabbed her ears and screamed at the top of her lungs for me to turn it off! At that I laughed. So now when I get mad at her I just turn that ring tone on! LOL

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/25/2006 9:37 PM charlotte

I'm 16 and it hurts to hear this. Why would someone even use this for a ring tone, it sounds like a high pitched version of nails screeching on a chalkboard....

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 10/27/2006 4:04 AM hussain

At my school the teachers dont care whether you have your phone or not, as long as its on silent. Still, i can see the advantages...

Another dammnfool idea that is going to end up with yet more annoyed people. The tone isn't silent - I am 36 and can hear it quite clearly. The advertising encourages kids to download this tone (yet more money down the frain) because teachers and parents can't hear it - hey, guys, have you ever thought that might not be a good idea? Since when has it been a good idea to play ultra high pitched tones that cause intense pain in people? Anyone who puts this onto their phone is a damn fool and will have hearing problems in the future. Would you jam a stick into your ear? No? Then why download this tone???

Have you ever heard the expression "Its only funny till someone gets hurt, then its hilarous"? Well take that and put it in to this forum. Kids like to laugh at other ppls discomfort. And by the way, i like this tone. It doesn't hurt my ears, nor annoy me. We teens don't kno who can hear it or who it will hurt. We don't kno everybody in the damn city/town or watever. If we like it, we get it..thats the way it works. Sorry to bring you to reality! But anyways this tone was a good idea because if parents can't hear the phone ring, they can't go answer it and be like "Who the hell are you, and how do you kno my son/daughter?" Yea, it happens!!!

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 1/11/2007 11:00 PM old but young

Wow, I turned the volume almost all the way down and I still herd it and I’m almost 40.
I also got a very bad head ach when a student played it for me in class, but none of the other teachers heard it that day and most were younger than me. I say if teachers don’t hear it and kids won’t stoop using it, schools should have it randomly play over the intercom, and students will soon drop it. Oh, I forgot, us teachers aren’t suppose to fight fair. No really, I agree that it will damage the ear drum in some ears that are sensitive to sounds, and it is only one more thing to distract the few students that are trying to do their work.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 2/16/2007 3:50 AM 37 and it hurts.

Im 37 and I can hear it very well, but it hurts like hell. people need to think about what damage they can do to a baby or little kid that can hear better than them; don't be stupid and use this till you go deaf or make a little child go deaf. How about you just sit in a room by yourself hook it up to some speakers and crank it up till you pass out, or better yet play it while you sleep since you think it's so funny. maybe some adults can't hear it, but please think about the little kids. Im all for playing at all schools on the loud speakers and lock them in them rooms.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 2/16/2007 4:14 AM stop it

Teachers should just lock students in a room and play it all day on the intercom system, since it's so cool that the think all adult's can't hear it. The younger you are the more it hurts, so don't hurt your little brother or sister or no other child, be respectful. I could hear the sound pitch all the way to 18 khz.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 2/28/2007 7:39 PM v

if you have verizon you can email it to yourself for the standard pix message fee (25 cents). if you save it to your ocomputer. Compose an email and attach the sound file. Send this to yournumber@vzwpix.com ie 6035551234@vxwpix.com you can do this with other companies, but i dont know their emails.. good luck and don't blow your ears out.

You See Mr. You Need a Differnet Mobile to listen to it. My Friend Go it on his mobile and it was so high pitched my mother could hear it.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 5/3/2007 1:17 PM Susan

I agree with courtney. This is a crap and people should not waste the money downloading this crap if they really like they can play the sample tone through the web and record it on MP3. Now a days mobile phone does have mp3 ringtones any way. So why bother wasting money

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 5/10/2007 10:01 AM jay

yeah its fun for a while to mess with it but it gets old in two days and you end up deleting it what a waste of 3 to 6 bucks if you think otherwise contact me with your bulls*** at mostwonderfulguy@aol.com

This tone is cool but its freaky, am 19 and it hurts my ears! But i think its still cOol! lol..!
If you have opera mini on your mobile phone and would like to download the tone, you can simply come to this site using your mini on your mobile phone and click the link at the top of this page, download will begin immediately straight to your phone! Though am a little concerned with the little ones, if it hurts me so badly when i hear it, truly the little ones must be getting alot more pain in their little ears! Be considerate!

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 8/7/2007 2:57 PM arturo

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 8/15/2007 4:13 PM Richard

I'm 68, my grandson tried a 21kHz ring tone, and asked if I heard it. I heard everything perfectly fine, and I thought it was really annoying, but surprisingly my wife can't hear anything above 16kHz, and she's 62.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 8/23/2007 5:00 PM lil' 1

Vibrate is good when there is nuttin in ur pocket/purse for it to rattle....but this is great unless the other kids in ur class decide to say whats that noise?!?

WHERE DO YOU GO TO DOWNLOADED IT

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 9/2/2007 10:24 AM thehiddenlily

Damn, I had it up all the way on my computer and I screamed. My brother came in my room to see what I was screaming about and he started to yell. Then my mum came in to see what we were screaming about...she was lucky she couldn't hear it. Oh well, it is still great to have. Then in class the other day the teacher was doing an expiremnt to see who could hear it...everyone, every student could...he couldn't hear it. The only down side to this story is that it gives me a headach and the teacher played it right above my head.

This is awesome, forget using this as a ringtone. My building has problems with sk8rs wrecking the place after hours. They can blast this on a loop every night and weekend...problem solved. This is the closest thing to a targeted crowd control weapon I have ever seen.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 3/30/2008 12:23 AM yojo

send the tone via blutoth to ur phone

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 4/6/2008 7:39 AM qlue

Firstly, hearing loss depends on many factors including genetic factors. Secondly, most phones are not capable of faithfully reproducing tones over fifteen khz.
The buzzing sound some commentators have mentioned is the result of the distortion from the speaker trying to operate outside of its frequency responce range. this could damage your phone. If you google "silent ringtone", you will find many sites offering free downloads so don't waste your money.
I'm 36 and my ears are still ringing fifteen minutes later.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 4/22/2008 7:08 PM G

I could hear this easily. On the teen buzz website I could hear up to 18khz(Very uncomfortable tone). I'm 36, male and have blown my ears off at many rock concerts so I am quite shocked I can hear 18k(even though it was faint). 19k and above I can't hear at all.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 9/23/2008 10:32 PM kent

I'm 21 and thought I couldn't hear anything. well I had the volume muted and headphones on, so after I turned mute off... I thought my eardrums were going to burst. This is really stupid and you really should watch if your teacher is in his or her 20s or 30s because I'm sure they can hear it too

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 9/28/2008 6:44 PM mclove

i hate this!! lol it seriously drives me insane.. lol

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 2/17/2009 11:43 PM Adam

they have different frequency versions of it
thats why some people that are 30..or 50, ect can hear it
thats why you download the last one that you can hear
so it makes it where less people can hear it
theres one for everyone to hear..60+ cant hear..49+ cant hear..39+ cant hear ect.
all the way down to anyone over 18 cannot hear it

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 2/23/2009 5:46 AM Pasques

OMG! (I know this post is years old, but...) I'm 40 years old and I've been getting annoying called on my phone, so I came looking for this ring tone. I can hear and it hurts! Forget annoying, that plain hurts!

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 2/23/2009 5:54 AM Pasques

FYI - I just transferred this to my phone and the frequency changed. Check this out before really using it.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 5/5/2009 9:48 PM tommee

ahhh!!!! that hurts! i jst played about 2 seconds of it, and i cant stand it. i have the volume of my pc pretty low, and that noise is pure agony. i dont think decibels or amplitude has anything to do with it. its the high frequency that drills your ears that brings pain.

    # re: The 'silent' ring tone 5/5/2009 9:52 PM migi

it hurts my tooth! sounds like the drill my dentist uses
