    Gartner: Windows Server leading Linux

CoolTechZone reports: "Linux is doomed, thanks to Microsoft".

The article is based on a recent Gartner report showing Windows Server leading Linux for server applications 37% to 31%.  This bit is notable:

The most important reason that Windows based servers are doing so well could be that programmers find it extremely easy to work on .Net and other related technologies (seamless integration). Plus, you have hassle free and rapid support from Microsoft, which is a comforting feature for corporate customers. When Windows Live comes in, we will see further integration between the server and online technical support areas, thereby making the troubleshooting process easier for in-house administrators and reducing overhead costs for the company.

Developers, developers, developers.  Welcome aboard, guys and gals.

The report describes *revenue*, it's a big stretch to say "leading" in general. How about: "bottled air is leading atmospheric air as these sales figures demonstrate...".

It may be the case that more people are using MS than Linux, but I doubt it (because of the Web hosts), and these figures don't prove anything one way or the other.

The numbers are actually relative to retail versions of Linux. They did not include non-retail versions. For example, we installed 20 Fedora servers last week - none of those were counted. So if you measure the market based on software sales revenue, as Gartner did, you will not really understand what is going on.

The better measure would be number of units installed. The problem? No one can count the number of Linux installs as there is no mechanism to do so.
