Yahoo, the Internet Archive, the University of California and other groups have formed the Open Content Alliance to work on a project that will digitize books in archives in the world. The project will make these books searchable and downloadable at no charge.
This, on the heels of the Author's Guild versus Google lawsuits (see “Authors Guild vs. Google: Continued Debate)”. The difference? Yahoo will scan and digitize only those texts already in the public domain.
