Okay. I just posted “US to retain control of the internet”, following on that I don't think I should follow this story anymore, as it appeared the US wasn't going to cede control and the developing countries really didn't have a voice.
MSNBC reports: “EU insists on international control of the Internet”, saying to me there's suddenly a louder voice with which to reckon. I guess I'll stay in this one for now.
So, since I'm in it, what are your thoughts? What does “control” really mean? IP addresses, name resolution, veto power, or something else? What of the .xxx domain? No, I don't cruise porn. However, our administration's continued delay of the .xxx suffix raises questions in my mind.
Right now, it looks like the larger nationals have gathered all the purportedly 'good' names (with .com, .net, .gov, etc.), and the developing countries don't care for this. Note that we're appending country ideitifiers to the major domain suffixes (.uk, .de, .fr, and the like); it works for the other majors: why doesn't that work for other nations?
