Apple admits iPod Nano Problem

While in the hotel lobby this morning, waiting for a much-needed coffee, I heard CNN announce that Apple admitted there were problems with the iPod Nano.  I’m glad to see they’re responding to this: the last time around, users waged a class action lawsuit over faulty batteries.

I dug about and found the web version of the story on CNN: “Apple admits iPod Nano Problem”.

There’s more: CNN: “Scratch that iPod Nano”, citing that Apple will replace iPod Nanos with broken or scratched screens.

Wired: “Nano scratches a nano problem”, echoing Apple’s claim that the number of defective devices is small.

hi,
I have bought an ipod nano. I connected to my PC through USB port. It's ok several times. But yesterday, after I copied mp3 songs to folder ipod_control > music. From that time, My ipod nano was frozen. I didn't use it as well as connect it to my PC. Help me?

Apologies, but this is not a Nano support forum. I suggest you contact Apple directly; I'm sure they can sort you out.

Best of luck.

# Beyond a Joke! 3/16/2006 7:28 AM Gill

I was given an IPOD Nano for Xmas by my partner. When I opened teh screen was cracked. I called up Apple and asked them wahat they would do about it. They sent somebody out from UPS to collect it and said they would soon send a replacement. They were true to their word and a replacement was sent to me swiftly. However, the replacement didn't charge or switch on. I called them up again and they told me to send it to another company who had a contract with them to fix these kind of problems. So i did as they said. I had to pay postage and packaging cost's of course. I received my third IPOD Nano, only to find that it didn't work! I am absolutely fuming and have sent it back for the third time. I still haven't been able to use my Xmas present and have paid god knows how much money in Postage and Packaging, which I am told by Apple, they cannot refund. It's beyond a joke. I will never purchase another
Apple Item again as long as i live.

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/17/2006 6:20 AM Lucky ipod nano owner ;-)

Hi! i see a good number of you have come across the same problem I had a few days back. I turned on my laptop, hooked up my ipod to the usb. The ipod turned on, and went to the play screen. And next, jus froze there! Thought maybe its doing something with the laptop, so left it there for a while. Even the light wouldn't go off! My conclusion was to leave it as it was and it would run out of battery, and reset itself or sumthing.. or atleast turn off! Hehe.. well, this didn't peace my mind, so started playing with it.. trying reseting a couple of times..so by chance pressed Menu and the select button (reset) together for sometime.. and that restarted it, and relieved me off my nightmare! So that might help you maybe.. gdluck.. there is more to the storie thou! :) neva used it after that, jus turned it off. nxt day turned it own.. and was quite shocked to see a very unfamiliar screen. it started running a self-diagnosis tool. I had to run thru the whole diagnosis by following the onscreen instructions.. but yea in the end it restarted and works fine. I din even loose any of my tracks! wel, gdluck to you guys on that! drop a msg if any1 of you come across the same issue... ;-)

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/17/2006 10:01 AM moi

ur NANOS SUCK! IT'S ONLY BEEN 2 MONTHS! BUT IT'S ALREADY GETTING SCREEN LOCKS! AND IT WON'T LET ME DO ANYTHING! U GUYS SHOUDL BE SHAMED OF URSELVES FOR EVEN SELLING THIS!!! yOU SHALL BE SUED!!!

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/19/2006 12:26 AM nicki

I loved my Nano and never put it in my pocket or purse. I have always kept it in a silicon gel case and it still got a "bleeding' cracked screen. Now it won't charge or work at all. Nano's cost too much money to be having these problems and Apple is looking to get sued again, if they can't fix these problems soon.

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/19/2006 12:01 PM PVT. Hayden

my nano has a mind of its own. it likes to go ahead and pick the track it wants to play and when its tired it go aheads and take a 5 minute nap on me. apple is sending me a new one

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/20/2006 7:51 AM cba

My nano shuts down when I press the menu button. what can I do?

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/22/2006 2:59 PM Robbie

I've got a similiar problem. When transferring tracks from my PC to the nano, my PC started running incredibly slowly and the ipod is turned off and won't turn on at all. When i plug into the USB thing, the ipod flickers and flashes but won't turn on. Although it had been fine for three or four months.

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/22/2006 4:31 PM don't like my nano right now.

my nano won't leave the Album Artwork part of the song and won't play anything i've purchased... which is 3/4 out of all my songs.

what am i gonna do?
i tried charging it. battery's full. no luck.
i tried draining the battery. nothing happened.
i tried everything...

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/25/2006 12:50 PM Kamiakishin00

I agree that Ipod nanos suck. Mine stopped working 10 days after i bought it. the screen flickered and it wont turn on. I think I'm gonna sue 'em for all this crap.

I'm currently having issues with a 30G Video iPod that won't shut down either. I might end up solving this, but maybe this points to a bigger problem than just the Nanos...

I had a problem with my nano where the little bar that fills when your song plays (the timer?) changed into a row of diamonds. It wouldn't change back so I had to re-load the software onto the ipod. Now it won't shut off (I just charged it last night!). I'm beginning to think I've been screwed by Apple. GRRR.

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 4/11/2006 3:20 AM Trooper

Sorry to hear of your issues, I worked for Apple (europe)from 2000 to December last year.

I KNOW THIS, Apple was and are still aware of the IPOD nano and IPOD 40Gb issue for a year.

Apple have a number of memos on it ( which I have read) stating that the issues are Minor and that a recall of hardware is not needed.

GUYS, keep on logging the calls with their support, write a letter ( keep a copy) send it to them. Don't give up.

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 4/11/2006 5:49 PM Nano Is Love, Apple is Not

My nano has some problems, but I like it. Sometimes it freezes, though. Try this before doing anything drastic *like getting a new Ipod*
Toggle and switch back and forth the hold button. Then hold down the menu and the circle button for at least 8 seconds. Eventually you should see the apple Logo.

Was getting ready to return my son's Ipod Nano to Best Buy because it wouldn't recharge. I tried all the tricks (5x R's) that Apple suggested- no luck.
I finally tried it in the front game port of my Xbox360- IT WORKED! ahhhh, the irony.....

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 5/13/2006 6:46 AM Jules

Msg's here reading "this is not the Apple support site, I suggest you contact ...." Sorry, if the Apple website was of any help people wouldnt be needing to 'vent' there frustrations through the many hundreds of websites like this. Bought my 2gb Nano month ago, went through the 5 R's on Apple website, spoke to staff many times, had it sent there to be fixed and sent back to be told nothing wrong with it. Been back on the phone and asked to send it back. The only thing I will say its it is so obvious why Apple and there macs, Ipods and what ever else they dream up wont come near the success, reliability and customer satisfaction as rival IBM!

Apple Nano is shit, mine freezes as everyone else's. Besides all this shit about having to use only the in-famous iTunes; the awful minimalistic aproach according to wich you just can't change volume while navigating; the volume wheel is too sensitive and sometimes you just touch it and it goes to maximum volume... as I said just shit. I will never bother with Apple again, thats for sure!

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 6/18/2006 9:43 AM ANT

If your iPod freezes then simply hold down Menu -> The select button or play depending on which iPod you got for 6 seconds.
Should reset

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 6/18/2006 9:22 PM McChickee

Plugged my Nano in to charge and the next day it was frozen with the battery icon displayed.

I've tried to reset it, and it does restart however right after the Apple icon is displayed it freezes again with the battery icon displayed.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the iPod software and iTunes. As well as done every troubleshoot step on the Apple website.

Nothing works! This is hopeless and looks like a lot of us are in the same boat. I'm taking it back and buying a Sony! :D

Got an iPod nano for a graduation gift, so I've had it for about a month now. I was at McDonalds this morning listening to music when all of a sudden the album work diappeared on the song it was playing, and only some songs would play. I turned it off and turned it on again and all my songs would not play. It would just skip through all of them. Well...got home and looked throught the manual and reset the iPod and now it works perfectly fine. Hopefully it will stay that way..

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/3/2006 11:47 PM Maria

ya...my nano was workin fine when I got it. (it's like 2-3 months old) but when I tried to use it again it started to start up...then I tried again it worked fine. but I tried it this morning and it worked fine for 2 songs, then froze. it got worse through out the day. now it will freeze if I don't have it plugged in. :'(

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/4/2006 8:19 PM Kenzi

hey...my nano was frozen on the "do not disconnect screen" with all of the pics and stuff and it wasnt draining power and the hold switch was stuck...wat i did was i held down the menu and the select button at the same time for about like six seconds or so... the first time i read this and tried it it didnt work but then i kept trying and eventually it worked so.... it is supposed to completely reset your ipod but i still had all of my songs and photos and podcasts....

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/18/2006 9:06 AM Laura

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/22/2006 9:47 AM Nanos are crap

i've had my nano for about 2 months, everything was fine until yesterday when the damn thing decided it could only play one song out of the 500 on there! each time i click to play a song it goes through each song in the album unable to play any of them, then takes me back to the start menu! im taking it back and not getting a replacement, i've heard too many stories of how utterly crap they are, and they are so expensive too. not impressed

My I Pod Nano was doing weird things. I updated the software from the internet and got it working again. It froze several times and I was able to reset it . This last time it just died. I am returning it to BEST BUY as I bought a replacement contract from them. I love my Rio Carbon. It still works. All the hipe over I Pod's and all the things you can buy, Apple should get their devices fixed and dependable.

My iPOD will not turn off and is stuck in "charging" mode. It plays songs but the battery has a lightening bolt and flashes like it is charging. When I try to turn it off it goes to "charging" even when it is not connected to anything. I tried resetting it; no luck. I let the battery run down and then plugged it in to my charger and reset it; again, no luck.

I've had my 2 gig ijunk crappo a couple of hours and this lock symbol stays on the screen that won't allow any functions except the re-boot, but it always goes back to the locked screen. When connected with the usb to the mac the lock symbol will flicker on and off like thre is a short in it. Occaisionally the lock will stay off and the pad will work, but for no reason that damn lock screen comes back and no dice. I can't even turn the power off. This device makes the all flop top 10!

i have same problem as 10/3/2006 12:37 AM robdale. nano stays constantly locked.

if i press the edge of the wheel, 45 degrees left of menu i can get it to unlock. but i have to keep it pressed and that gives me access to all its functions. this is obviously a defect, not sure if mechanical or microcode... but as someone else has exact same problem as me i'm starting to think a bug fix may do the trick. i'll be driving back to the store tomorrow for a prompt replacment :)

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 10/29/2006 9:09 AM Faye

I had to take mine back the day after I bought it - it never switched on from out of the box, with either the USB cable, or an apple power adapter. Reset did nothing, I couldn't get a thing out of it.

Now I've got a metallic new version, and not only did it work straight away, but it survivied a run with me today. Either they've fixed the issues, or it was second time lucky :-)

My ipod can be plugged in for weeks and it still say "Do not disconnect" it never says it is fully charged. If I don't leave it plugged in the USB port a few days it will go dead

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 11/15/2006 12:45 PM AJ

Shit, after reading these comments, am never gonna purchase another ipod again. My ipod mini just frozed up and it only shows the apple logo. Its not responding to anything! The battery has to die for it to turn off!Apple sucks ass! There customer service sucks and they would not tell whats wrong with your ipod if you dont have the warranty.I told an agent the problems i was having and he just said "you dont have a warranty is there anything else i can assist with". I asked for some help and he didnt even tell me why it froze. The ipod's life span is probably only for a year then it stops working! I was soo pissed off because i lost my collection of songs that i was building up for a year. Never again will i buy from apple!

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 12/8/2006 10:39 AM laurenn

my ipod nano sucks worse than anyone's here. it appears to work, but when you go to play a song it won't play. everything will work nicely but when you play a song, it'll say you've hit the play button, but the numbers won't change (indicating the song is playing) and no sound comes out. it's retarded. and on top of that, once you turn it off, you can't turn it back on unless you plug it into itunes and wait for all the music to appear.
there are more issues with it too. i got mine at costco and it's been almost a year that i've had mine. THe only reason costco couldn't replace my ipod nano is because the price dropped $100. they did say i could return it and get my money back.... if i can find the reciept.
=[

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 12/11/2006 3:03 PM SG

Good luck with the Nano.

I went to the gym with mine today and it froze as soon as I tried to play it. Seeing as its about 3 weeks old, I found that rather odd.

Good thing was that there was an Apple Store near to where my gym was, and I went there after the work out. I knew there would be a reset pattern to the keys, I just had to ask what they were.

So I get there. And it turns out I need to make a RESERVATION to talk to someone.

I kid you not.

The guy takes the time to show me how to make one by hitting APPLE's site, and then giving my name and email address etc. It was 3pm in the afternoon..."Any openings?" He glances at the board "Not til 6pm, do you want to wait?".

NO thanks

Chucks Nano.

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 12/19/2006 1:39 PM Rob M.

Purchased my iPod nano a little over a year ago. Now it will not shut off. I have visited apple's website and did the reccomended refresh/reboot. Also, reinstalled the software. Even took it to the official apple store (where i was treated very rudely) where a tech tried to fix it, but couldn't. I spoke to the manager and he said there is nothing he can do, since my iPod was 28 days over a year old. 28 days outside of the warranty. I probably logged about a 30hrs total time on it. I don't use it very much and take excellent care of it. The manager offered me a 10% discount off the purchase of a new one if i returned the old one to apple. apple is a company with very poor service. I have already purchased a new Dell mp3 player for myself and one for my kid, as a Christmas present. It's time to sell that apple stock if you have any. It's the beginning of the end for apple.

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 12/19/2006 2:57 PM Hugh

Ive had my Nano for less than a year, and last night it started to go all weird on me, I would start playing a song, then it would pause, then start another random song. So I went to put it on the charger, and bam! now all the songs are missing, even though its says Ive used 1.24gig of space...can anyone help?

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 12/20/2006 9:32 AM Earl

my ipod freezes kinda differently. i leaves it off for a while with the hold switch on. when i take it off hold it comes on. lets me play music (sometimes). then it freezes, BUT the music continues to play (as long as i dont mess with the hold switch). that when i turn on the hold switch. the lock on the screen shows. but when i take it off hold, IT RESETS!!! sometime when i keep sliding the hold switch on & off it keeps RESETTING!!!! i keep looking this problem up, no success. i keep getting the, hold select & menu for 6-10 seconds solution. that worthless cause the hold switch causes it to reset as if i did the, menu-select option. what else can i do?
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!

Bought my nano a year ago, Started having charging issues over the summer. Nano would charge but batteries would last only 2 minutes before it needed to be charged again. I sent it in and got the battery replaced. the battery life is normal now HOWEVER THE MOTHER F#CKING NANO ONLY CHARGES 10% OF THE BATTERY AND REFUSES TO CHARGE MORE EVEN AFTER BEING PLUGGED INTO MY COMP FOR A F#cking WEEK!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING!!! IM SENDING MY IPOD BACK (I got an extended warranty) AND I AM ASKING FOR A NEW ONE. I HOPE STEVE JOBS GETS RUN OVER BY A CEMENT MIXER.

got a 4gb nano for xmas... thing has the white screen of death within 15 minutes of using it. what caused it was updating the software off itunes. what a piece of crap. you would think for $200 this piece of crap would actually work. way to go apple!

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 12/26/2006 3:10 AM Gary McMillan

I bought both of my daughters 8g nanos for xmas. One had problems with the head phone socket which came alright after trying many other sets of ear phones. Then this morning less than 24 hours after them recieving them as their presents, the other nano just froze with the screen lit up. i tried plugging it in to the computer abd ran itunes diagnostic tool which did not find the nano. I have since held the menu and select buttons and this switched off the nano. ihave installed the latest software update version 1.1.1 and as i type it is still saying do not disconnect.

# re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 12/30/2006 12:53 PM Fixer

http//www.apple.com/support/

It has fixed most of my problems i have had with my new apple ipod nano

My ipod was also acting as if it had a mind of its own

turning off and changing songs when it wanted!
I followed apple.com/support said and all i had to do was hold the menu and select button at the same time until the apple logo appeared then it fixed itself!

The website has even more solutions to your ipod problems!

If it doesnt then there is phone numbers on the site at which you can contact them and have a new ipod sent to you!

So as the last person said Stop whinning and get off your ass and do something about your problems!
