    Apple admits iPod Nano Problem

While in the hotel lobby this morning, waiting for a much-needed coffee, I heard CNN announce that Apple admitted there were problems with the iPod Nano.  I’m glad to see they’re responding to this: the last time around, users waged a class action lawsuit over faulty batteries.

I dug about and found the web version of the story on CNN: “Apple admits iPod Nano Problem”.

There’s more: CNN: “Scratch that iPod Nano”, citing that Apple will replace iPod Nanos with broken or scratched screens.

Wired: “Nano scratches a nano problem”, echoing Apple’s claim that the number of defective devices is small.

    hi,
I have bought an ipod nano. I connected to my PC through USB port. It's ok several times. But yesterday, after I copied mp3 songs to folder ipod_control > music. From that time, My ipod nano was frozen. I didn't use it as well as connect it to my PC. Help me?

Apologies, but this is not a Nano support forum. I suggest you contact Apple directly; I'm sure they can sort you out.

    Best of luck.

    # Beyond a Joke! 3/16/2006 7:28 AM Gill

I was given an IPOD Nano for Xmas by my partner. When I opened teh screen was cracked. I called up Apple and asked them wahat they would do about it. They sent somebody out from UPS to collect it and said they would soon send a replacement. They were true to their word and a replacement was sent to me swiftly. However, the replacement didn't charge or switch on. I called them up again and they told me to send it to another company who had a contract with them to fix these kind of problems. So i did as they said. I had to pay postage and packaging cost's of course. I received my third IPOD Nano, only to find that it didn't work! I am absolutely fuming and have sent it back for the third time. I still haven't been able to use my Xmas present and have paid god knows how much money in Postage and Packaging, which I am told by Apple, they cannot refund. It's beyond a joke. I will never purchase another
Apple Item again as long as i live.

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/17/2006 6:20 AM Lucky ipod nano owner ;-)

Hi! i see a good number of you have come across the same problem I had a few days back. I turned on my laptop, hooked up my ipod to the usb. The ipod turned on, and went to the play screen. And next, jus froze there! Thought maybe its doing something with the laptop, so left it there for a while. Even the light wouldn't go off! My conclusion was to leave it as it was and it would run out of battery, and reset itself or sumthing.. or atleast turn off! Hehe.. well, this didn't peace my mind, so started playing with it.. trying reseting a couple of times..so by chance pressed Menu and the select button (reset) together for sometime.. and that restarted it, and relieved me off my nightmare! So that might help you maybe.. gdluck.. there is more to the storie thou! :) neva used it after that, jus turned it off. nxt day turned it own.. and was quite shocked to see a very unfamiliar screen. it started running a self-diagnosis tool. I had to run thru the whole diagnosis by following the onscreen instructions.. but yea in the end it restarted and works fine. I din even loose any of my tracks! wel, gdluck to you guys on that! drop a msg if any1 of you come across the same issue... ;-)

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/17/2006 10:01 AM moi

ur NANOS SUCK! IT'S ONLY BEEN 2 MONTHS! BUT IT'S ALREADY GETTING SCREEN LOCKS! AND IT WON'T LET ME DO ANYTHING! U GUYS SHOUDL BE SHAMED OF URSELVES FOR EVEN SELLING THIS!!! yOU SHALL BE SUED!!!

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/19/2006 12:26 AM nicki

I loved my Nano and never put it in my pocket or purse. I have always kept it in a silicon gel case and it still got a "bleeding' cracked screen. Now it won't charge or work at all. Nano's cost too much money to be having these problems and Apple is looking to get sued again, if they can't fix these problems soon.

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/19/2006 12:01 PM PVT. Hayden

my nano has a mind of its own. it likes to go ahead and pick the track it wants to play and when its tired it go aheads and take a 5 minute nap on me. apple is sending me a new one

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/20/2006 7:51 AM cba

My nano shuts down when I press the menu button. what can I do?

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/22/2006 2:59 PM Robbie

I've got a similiar problem. When transferring tracks from my PC to the nano, my PC started running incredibly slowly and the ipod is turned off and won't turn on at all. When i plug into the USB thing, the ipod flickers and flashes but won't turn on. Although it had been fine for three or four months.

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/22/2006 4:31 PM don't like my nano right now.

my nano won't leave the Album Artwork part of the song and won't play anything i've purchased... which is 3/4 out of all my songs.

    what am i gonna do?
i tried charging it. battery's full. no luck.
i tried draining the battery. nothing happened.
    i tried everything...

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/25/2006 12:50 PM Kamiakishin00

I agree that Ipod nanos suck. Mine stopped working 10 days after i bought it. the screen flickered and it wont turn on. I think I'm gonna sue 'em for all this crap.

I'm currently having issues with a 30G Video iPod that won't shut down either. I might end up solving this, but maybe this points to a bigger problem than just the Nanos...

I had a problem with my nano where the little bar that fills when your song plays (the timer?) changed into a row of diamonds. It wouldn't change back so I had to re-load the software onto the ipod. Now it won't shut off (I just charged it last night!). I'm beginning to think I've been screwed by Apple. GRRR.

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 4/11/2006 3:20 AM Trooper

Sorry to hear of your issues, I worked for Apple (europe)from 2000 to December last year.

I KNOW THIS, Apple was and are still aware of the IPOD nano and IPOD 40Gb issue for a year.

Apple have a number of memos on it ( which I have read) stating that the issues are Minor and that a recall of hardware is not needed.

GUYS, keep on logging the calls with their support, write a letter ( keep a copy) send it to them. Don't give up.

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 4/11/2006 5:49 PM Nano Is Love, Apple is Not

My nano has some problems, but I like it. Sometimes it freezes, though. Try this before doing anything drastic *like getting a new Ipod*
Toggle and switch back and forth the hold button. Then hold down the menu and the circle button for at least 8 seconds. Eventually you should see the apple Logo.

I finally tried it in the front game port of my Xbox360- IT WORKED! ahhhh, the irony.....

Msg's here reading "this is not the Apple support site, I suggest you contact ...." Sorry, if the Apple website was of any help people wouldnt be needing to 'vent' there frustrations through the many hundreds of websites like this. Bought my 2gb Nano month ago, went through the 5 R's on Apple website, spoke to staff many times, had it sent there to be fixed and sent back to be told nothing wrong with it. Been back on the phone and asked to send it back. The only thing I will say its it is so obvious why Apple and there macs, Ipods and what ever else they dream up wont come near the success, reliability and customer satisfaction as rival IBM!

Apple Nano is shit, mine freezes as everyone else's. Besides all this shit about having to use only the in-famous iTunes; the awful minimalistic aproach according to wich you just can't change volume while navigating; the volume wheel is too sensitive and sometimes you just touch it and it goes to maximum volume... as I said just shit. I will never bother with Apple again, thats for sure!

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 6/18/2006 9:43 AM ANT

If your iPod freezes then simply hold down Menu -> The select button or play depending on which iPod you got for 6 seconds.
    Should reset

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 6/18/2006 9:22 PM McChickee

Plugged my Nano in to charge and the next day it was frozen with the battery icon displayed.

I've tried to reset it, and it does restart however right after the Apple icon is displayed it freezes again with the battery icon displayed.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the iPod software and iTunes. As well as done every troubleshoot step on the Apple website.

Nothing works! This is hopeless and looks like a lot of us are in the same boat. I'm taking it back and buying a Sony! :D

Got an iPod nano for a graduation gift, so I've had it for about a month now. I was at McDonalds this morning listening to music when all of a sudden the album work diappeared on the song it was playing, and only some songs would play. I turned it off and turned it on again and all my songs would not play. It would just skip through all of them. Well...got home and looked throught the manual and reset the iPod and now it works perfectly fine. Hopefully it will stay that way..

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/3/2006 11:47 PM Maria

ya...my nano was workin fine when I got it. (it's like 2-3 months old) but when I tried to use it again it started to start up...then I tried again it worked fine. but I tried it this morning and it worked fine for 2 songs, then froze. it got worse through out the day. now it will freeze if I don't have it plugged in. :'(

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/4/2006 8:19 PM Kenzi

hey...my nano was frozen on the "do not disconnect screen" with all of the pics and stuff and it wasnt draining power and the hold switch was stuck...wat i did was i held down the menu and the select button at the same time for about like six seconds or so... the first time i read this and tried it it didnt work but then i kept trying and eventually it worked so.... it is supposed to completely reset your ipod but i still had all of my songs and photos and podcasts....

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/18/2006 9:06 AM Laura

I've had my ipod nano for about a year. But now when i try to put songs on it, something pops up saying that I need to apply the software updater.....what do i do?????

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/22/2006 9:47 AM Nanos are crap

i've had my nano for about 2 months, everything was fine until yesterday when the damn thing decided it could only play one song out of the 500 on there! each time i click to play a song it goes through each song in the album unable to play any of them, then takes me back to the start menu! im taking it back and not getting a replacement, i've heard too many stories of how utterly crap they are, and they are so expensive too. not impressed

My I Pod Nano was doing weird things. I updated the software from the internet and got it working again. It froze several times and I was able to reset it . This last time it just died. I am returning it to BEST BUY as I bought a replacement contract from them. I love my Rio Carbon. It still works. All the hipe over I Pod's and all the things you can buy, Apple should get their devices fixed and dependable.

My iPOD will not turn off and is stuck in "charging" mode. It plays songs but the battery has a lightening bolt and flashes like it is charging. When I try to turn it off it goes to "charging" even when it is not connected to anything. I tried resetting it; no luck. I let the battery run down and then plugged it in to my charger and reset it; again, no luck.

I just got my iPod in from FedEX not too long ago at all.
Maybe 5 hours ago? And now it's skipping through all the songs.
    Why is it doing this?
    I've tried to reset it.
    and it doesn't work.
    iTunes won't pop up either.
and it's really starting to piss me off.

I've had my 2 gig ijunk crappo a couple of hours and this lock symbol stays on the screen that won't allow any functions except the re-boot, but it always goes back to the locked screen. When connected with the usb to the mac the lock symbol will flicker on and off like thre is a short in it. Occaisionally the lock will stay off and the pad will work, but for no reason that damn lock screen comes back and no dice. I can't even turn the power off. This device makes the all flop top 10!

i have same problem as 10/3/2006 12:37 AM robdale. nano stays constantly locked.

if i press the edge of the wheel, 45 degrees left of menu i can get it to unlock. but i have to keep it pressed and that gives me access to all its functions. this is obviously a defect, not sure if mechanical or microcode... but as someone else has exact same problem as me i'm starting to think a bug fix may do the trick. i'll be driving back to the store tomorrow for a prompt replacment :)

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 10/29/2006 9:09 AM Faye

I had to take mine back the day after I bought it - it never switched on from out of the box, with either the USB cable, or an apple power adapter. Reset did nothing, I couldn't get a thing out of it.

Now I've got a metallic new version, and not only did it work straight away, but it survivied a run with me today. Either they've fixed the issues, or it was second time lucky :-)

my nano wont charge for some stupid reason. The battery is on zero, i put in the usb cable for charging and five seconds later, it said it was charged. i took of the usb cable but it battery is still at zero and now i cant listen to it. Im going to return it and hopefully my new one will work

Shit, after reading these comments, am never gonna purchase another ipod again. My ipod mini just frozed up and it only shows the apple logo. Its not responding to anything! The battery has to die for it to turn off!Apple sucks ass! There customer service sucks and they would not tell whats wrong with your ipod if you dont have the warranty.I told an agent the problems i was having and he just said "you dont have a warranty is there anything else i can assist with". I asked for some help and he didnt even tell me why it froze. The ipod's life span is probably only for a year then it stops working! I was soo pissed off because i lost my collection of songs that i was building up for a year. Never again will i buy from apple!

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 12/8/2006 10:39 AM laurenn

my ipod nano sucks worse than anyone's here. it appears to work, but when you go to play a song it won't play. everything will work nicely but when you play a song, it'll say you've hit the play button, but the numbers won't change (indicating the song is playing) and no sound comes out. it's retarded. and on top of that, once you turn it off, you can't turn it back on unless you plug it into itunes and wait for all the music to appear.
there are more issues with it too. i got mine at costco and it's been almost a year that i've had mine. THe only reason costco couldn't replace my ipod nano is because the price dropped $100. they did say i could return it and get my money back.... if i can find the reciept.
    =[

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 12/11/2006 3:03 PM SG

    Good luck with the Nano.

I went to the gym with mine today and it froze as soon as I tried to play it. Seeing as its about 3 weeks old, I found that rather odd.

Good thing was that there was an Apple Store near to where my gym was, and I went there after the work out. I knew there would be a reset pattern to the keys, I just had to ask what they were.

So I get there. And it turns out I need to make a RESERVATION to talk to someone.

    I kid you not.

The guy takes the time to show me how to make one by hitting APPLE's site, and then giving my name and email address etc. It was 3pm in the afternoon..."Any openings?" He glances at the board "Not til 6pm, do you want to wait?".

    NO thanks

    Chucks Nano.

Purchased my iPod nano a little over a year ago. Now it will not shut off. I have visited apple's website and did the reccomended refresh/reboot. Also, reinstalled the software. Even took it to the official apple store (where i was treated very rudely) where a tech tried to fix it, but couldn't. I spoke to the manager and he said there is nothing he can do, since my iPod was 28 days over a year old. 28 days outside of the warranty. I probably logged about a 30hrs total time on it. I don't use it very much and take excellent care of it. The manager offered me a 10% discount off the purchase of a new one if i returned the old one to apple. apple is a company with very poor service. I have already purchased a new Dell mp3 player for myself and one for my kid, as a Christmas present. It's time to sell that apple stock if you have any. It's the beginning of the end for apple.

Ive had my Nano for less than a year, and last night it started to go all weird on me, I would start playing a song, then it would pause, then start another random song. So I went to put it on the charger, and bam! now all the songs are missing, even though its says Ive used 1.24gig of space...can anyone help?

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 12/20/2006 9:32 AM Earl

my ipod freezes kinda differently. i leaves it off for a while with the hold switch on. when i take it off hold it comes on. lets me play music (sometimes). then it freezes, BUT the music continues to play (as long as i dont mess with the hold switch). that when i turn on the hold switch. the lock on the screen shows. but when i take it off hold, IT RESETS!!! sometime when i keep sliding the hold switch on & off it keeps RESETTING!!!! i keep looking this problem up, no success. i keep getting the, hold select & menu for 6-10 seconds solution. that worthless cause the hold switch causes it to reset as if i did the, menu-select option. what else can i do?

I sent it in and got the battery replaced. the battery life is normal now HOWEVER THE MOTHER F#CKING NANO ONLY CHARGES 10% OF THE BATTERY AND REFUSES TO CHARGE MORE EVEN AFTER BEING PLUGGED INTO MY COMP FOR A F#cking WEEK!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING!!! IM SENDING MY IPOD BACK (I got an extended warranty) AND I AM ASKING FOR A NEW ONE. I HOPE STEVE JOBS GETS RUN OVER BY A CEMENT MIXER.

I bought both of my daughters 8g nanos for xmas. One had problems with the head phone socket which came alright after trying many other sets of ear phones. Then this morning less than 24 hours after them recieving them as their presents, the other nano just froze with the screen lit up. i tried plugging it in to the computer abd ran itunes diagnostic tool which did not find the nano. I have since held the menu and select buttons and this switched off the nano. ihave installed the latest software update version 1.1.1 and as i type it is still saying do not disconnect.

My ipod was also acting as if it had a mind of its own

turning off and changing songs when it wanted!
I followed apple.com/support said and all i had to do was hold the menu and select button at the same time until the apple logo appeared then it fixed itself!

The website has even more solutions to your ipod problems!

If it doesnt then there is phone numbers on the site at which you can contact them and have a new ipod sent to you!

So as the last person said Stop whinning and get off your ass and do something about your problems!

Especially when it is within warranty and < 5 months old. C'mon Apple...get real and back your products up.

I purchased a nano this past July and it decided not to turn on today at all, not even with a charge. It has only been 6 months and it is broken.

I also bought an ipod nano for my boyfriend in december and it did not work straight out of the box. We returned it in exchange for a new one and that one worked for a few hours and then stopped working that same night. Finally on the third try we got one that worked, but my faith is completly gone in apple products!!! Three broken nanos!

Most of the problems that people have stated here could be easily solved by following the " Guild to the Ipod Nano" Others could be solved by common sense or going to the Apple support page(www.apple.com/support). When your computer freeze, what is the first thing you do? Restart it. You should be doing the same with your Ipod when it freezes (Hold Menu, and Select for 6 seconds. Other. Other problems like "My Ipod won't turn off" are solved by holding the Play button, then, keeping it held flicked the Hold swich on, release the play, then flick the Hold button off again.(May need to repeat step.) This should release your Ipod, and let it turn off. As of battery charging, you may need to send your Ipod to get it replaced by Apple, or replace it yourself with a kit. In rare cases your problem can be solved by pushing the USB plug only half way into your computer (Takes a few attempts)

My nano is literally 12 hours old, NO EVEN A WHOLE DAY! and it keeps randomely pausing whever it feels like it, other sites have suggested problems with the headphones or the headphone connection, but i've cheacked and re checked, nothing, can this be fixed or returned or what!? What is going on!? *Smacks forehead*

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 2/25/2007 12:47 PM Kim doesnt like ipods

I thought i was the only one having this problem. The first Ipod nano i got was for christmas and a month later it froze on me. It would stay on all day. So i returned it and the guy at the store told me i had to punch in a code, he said it should be in the booklet that came with it.... The ipod nano doesnt come with a booklet and further more there is no code to punch in (the guy was stupid). So i got a new one and this one lasted two weeks and froze!!! Now i have to return this one but I dont want store credit because apple sucks.

If you return your ipod nano demand that you get your money back because no equipment should be so damaged. Who wants store credit for something that keeps breaking?

When I play a song, ipod nano (8 gig) skips through each song, one by one, until it has gone over all the songs in the playlist, without playing, and it returns back to the main menu. This is the second time it has done this; the last time I completely restored and updated it and the problem went away for a about a week... now it's back. I see from some previous posts that this is a regular problem.

My iPod Nano froze while I was charging it on my computer and I followed the procedure that they said to do on the Apple web site. Now it's stuck on a different screen that is telling me to use itunes to restore. It shows this in English, German, Chinese and another language. Does this mean that all my songs were deleted? I have tried the steps again to unfreeze it from the current screen it's on but nothing is working now. Can anyone help?

I had same problems with my nano. Firstly the freezing problem witch i solved by resetting my nano (turn on hold, then turn it off and hold play and menu buttons for 6-10 seconds. And when i had problems with the battery i simply took a little needle and cleanded the dust from cable socket. And everything got OK again. Sorry for my bad EN:)

Ok, I use my ipod to workout out and run 5 days a week. It's been working fine and i got it since Christmas of 06. Until yesterday for some strange reason, the play/pause button doesn't work. Instead the play/pause icon keeps on repeating constantly for hours and it's hard to return to the menu screen. I've tried plugging it in to charge, tried to restart it and tried to just let it run out of battery juice. Nothing has worked. What could be the problem??? I can't workout out without something to motivate me like music. Now it's driving me crazy!! It's something similar to Ruples problem where it keeps pausing and playing whenever it feels like but has nothing to do with the headphones.

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/1/2007 4:27 AM Dave

I bought my first IPOD Nano on June 6. It is now June 30 and I have been through 3 and am about to go back to Walmart to return my third Ipod before the 15 days are up for returning/replacing. The problem is PERVASIVE with Nanos. All 3 have exhibited the same problem, i.e., while I am running with my IPOD in it's armband holster, the screen freezes and none of the controls work anymore. Not even resetting works to cure the problem. Believe me folks, Apple has some MAJOR quality problems with IPODS, and I am about to go back to Walmart now and get my money back. It is almost a JOKE with me now, and I am seriously considering just continuing to replace these damn things ad infinitum until hopefully Apple realizes they have a serious issue. And I wish they'd put something on their damn website regarding these problems and possible solutions. Apple spends all of its effort on marketing and creating brand image and not enough on hardware. BUYER BEWARE

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/1/2007 8:18 PM Dave

OK, now it's July 1 and I've just exchanged my Ipod. I'm on my FOURTH Ipod in a month. I use my IPOD every day to run mounted in my IPOD armband, and I've decided to evaluate these damn things and continue to exchange them until I find one that works fine for the entire two week evaluation period. There is no damn reason that I should have any problem AT ALL with these things if they are built right, so I'm going to give APPLE my business, because I've already bought several IPOD accessories. I'm just going to keep exchanging these things at the LEAST sign of a performance problem. At the end of two weeks, if it looks like I've gotten one without problems, I'm going to buy the extended warranty(unless I've got to pay shipping which I haven't checked into. I can't afford shipping costs at the rate these things fail).
I will NEVER buy another Apple product for home use or in the company I own. This is just plain ridiculous.

I'll keep you posted on Ipod NUMBER 4.

my mom updated her ipod nano a while ago and didnt get to use it for a while due to work and all but today, when she tried to play her songs, she found that her screen was frozen and could not turn it off...not even the light!!! i tried to toggle the hold button on and off and didnt see the little symbol on the screen. then i pushed and held the menu and select button for a while until the screen showed an apple symbol. and her ipod was finally fixed. so everyone should try that before going to apple or buying a new ipod.

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/3/2007 7:04 PM Dimitri

if your ipod dosent show up on itunes then you need to reset it by toggling your hold button once and holding menu and the middle button for about 5 sec until the apple sign show up and it should show up again

OK, please refer to my July 1 posting. I posted twice here. Here's a newsflash for all you IPOD nano users with freezing issues. I'm on IPOD number 4, and what I have found is that when I use my IPOD on an armband while , I have a freezing problem. I think it's because of either jostling while running or perhaps a bead of sweat entering the ipod. I have since bought a belt clip and am pleased to report that my problem seems to have disappeared. Therefore, to prevent freezing, KEEP YOUR IPOD DRY AND/OR DON'T RUN WITH IT IN AN ARMBAND.

I can't believe people are asking "how do I return this, how do I get help", did they not get a warranty agreement with their iPod? Maybe they throw away anything with more than 4 words on it. Apple will repair or replace any defective item within 1 year of purchase.

And I also can't believe how many "whoops I disconnected it wrong and now it won't work" problems, the proper ejection process is very clearly explained in the booklet- IN PICTURES, no reading necessary. It's just like ANY OTHER COMPUTER HARDWARE (external drives etc), if you disconnect it while it's working, your data may become corrupted.

For people who can't figure out how to turn on their iPod or how to load music, I suggest visiting an Apple store and not bashing the company.

My Nano freeze almost every day. A reset solves the issue, but a Windows 3.11 PC used for gaming is more stable. I don't understand how they can make a single purpose device which is so unstable.

If you're not having problems with YOUR iPod dude then get a life and don't go on this forum and wait for yours to break. I got my iPod months ago as well. Maybe 7 months ago I think. Anyway this is the first time this has happened, but my iPod froze today but not like it usually does, (the way you can just reset it). It wouldnt work the screen was lit up and it said it was locked even though the switch wasn't on hold. I found a guy "lucky iPod owner" who had the same problem and i held down the reset button longer than usual and it worked!! I got scarred cause the light was stuck on and it wouldnt play or go off hold. and the iPod support site doesnt help one bit usually!!!

I was extremely impressed and surprised at how fast we received our shipping box, how fast it arrived at the repair station in California and how fast it was returned to us. The whole process took only 3 days! However, I am not impressed with the overall reliability of the Ipod products. The service process is speedy and impressive, but the process may have been perfected as a result of many people having some of the reliability problems that we have experienced with our Ipods. The Ipod we just had serviced is the fifth model our family has owned and all have either been sent back for warranty repair or are no longer working.

    1. Shuffle - out of warranty and no longer working.
    2. Mini - returned for service under warranty - since then sold and
upgraded to the IPod Video 30GB.
    3. Ipod Video 30GB - returned for service under warranty -
working since then - warranty expires August 2007.
    4. Nano 2GB - returned to retailer less than 1 week after Christmas
2006 due to it not working. Returned it and the store was out of
    2GB Nano - upgraded to 4MB Nano.
    5. Nano 4GB – March 2007 Returned for service not recognized by our PC - Apple exchanged it.
    6. Nano 4GB – April 2007 - Replacement Ipod lasted under a month battery heated up & wouldn’t recharge – had to be sent back for replacement.
    7. Nano 4GB – April 2007 – Relplacement Ipod again could not be recognized by our PC – had to be sent back again for replacement
    8. Ipod Video 30 GB – Just out of warrantly - Headphone jack only plays headphones out of 1 ear would cost $149.00 to replace thru Apple Service.
    9. Nano 4GB – July 2007 - Replacement Ipod actually went bad again in very late May again could not be recognized – but did not get around to calling for
service until July – Apple sent another replacement - within the 2nd day an all new problem occurred – after 5 – 10 minutes of normal play the sound distorts to where you can’t even hear any music. If you turn it down to about ¼ volume – it plays but not loud enough to hear well at all.

I called Apple to try and get them to replace this current I pod which is only about 1 month old – they are now telling me that it will cost me either $31.00 to ship it back – or I can by their 2 year service plan for $39 and the shipping will be free WTF!! I also noticed that when I called about this problem – Apple seems to now be using some “F**k’d up international call center where you can hardly understand the person that answers. I asked to speak with a supervisor – held for about 20 minutes and finally had to hang up – I’m really frustrated – don’t know where it will go from here – but I do plan to call them again if for nothing else just to bitch about spending $200 on a piece of sh*t. Might as well have wiped my ass with the money – I have not had more more than about 2 months of continuous use out of the Nano since we got it in December 2006. What a nightmare!

I've had my ipod nano for six months and this is the first problem I've had with it that I don't know what to do. The only other problem I've had with it is that it froze once or twice. My nano doesn't show in itunes that its connected and when I plug it in to the computer nothing happens except for the fact that it charges. I can't transfer songs. What should I do...... However, I can still listen to music on my nano and everything else... Weird uh?

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 8/26/2007 5:12 AM Eric

What am I suppose to do when my iPod Nano keeps on reseting itself?

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 8/26/2007 10:34 AM Erica

Everytime I want to shuffle my songs on my iPod, it skips all my songs really really fast until it's done going through my songs then it goes to the menu. Finally I got it to work right so then I decided maybe I should put some new songs on it. Now whenever I plug it in to put new songs on it it says that my playlist I selected to put on it doesnt exist anymore. Then.. it deleted all my songs I had on it... and it still won't let me put music on it.

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 9/17/2007 1:58 AM Pia.

I got an iPod nano for christmas. It was working fine until one day I was flicking quickly through songs until it froze in between two songs. I looked inside the case I got my nano in, and it tells you how to unfreeze an iPod.

To unfreeze it, toggle the hold button once, the press the center and menu button at the same time for about 6 seconds. That should reset your iPod without loosing your data.

    Hope this helps.

I got my 2nd gen nano about a month ago, and have seen similar problems. HOWEVER, I challenge anyone to try other mp3 players on the market. iPod is still the best. Love it or leave it. I do not work for Apple, but am a software developer.

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 9/18/2007 7:37 PM chris

I looked into pretty much every player out there and tried a few, but went back to the iPod. I've always been able to resolve the issues people are mentioning by resetting or restoring my nano.

i've been using apple products for the last seventeen years. i've got 5th generation ipod video and i'm quite happy with it, but the new ipod nano is a piece of shit wich supposed to be retested in their labs and never leave the factory. i've just bought two of them for my kids as the christmas presents and they're both frozen already on an apple logo screen... nothing helps! i've tried to charge them and drain them, connect to the G4, imac and... awfull windozze toshiba laptop, i've tried to reset the many many times, switched the to the diagnistics, disk mode etc. i've tried disk warrior, tech tools pro and anapod. nothing. no pc nor mac can see them (and obviously nor the itunes). the good thing is, they're still under the warranty. they're crap, that's all. perhaps apple must've tried to blanket sweep the whole spectrum of the market to outdo the competition, but it all went sour for them. just gisa back the money!

I was having the same problems as most of you but what i did was went got the directions and they said:
If your ipod isn't responding then you should switch the restarting button on and off.
Then you should hold the Menu button and the center button for about 6 minutes and wait until the iPod comes back and.
And you should see the iPod loggo.

Now i am bak in buissness

Well, I guess I should have read this forum before buying a couple for my friend's girls for Christmas. One works fine, the other worked fine for a few days and then froze. Tried all the resetting procedures known and it's still frozen. I can't turn the damn ting off either. That damn Apple screen just keeps flashing at me, like it's laughing at me, saying "fool!" I even took it to an Apple Store this afternoon and I ended up buying another as a replacement for my friend's girl, and I made an appointment with their "genious desk" for tomorrow to see what the problem is. Boy, I can't wait to hear this one.

I recently bought an Ipod Nano (4gigs) and the buttons are having trouble working. Say if i turn on my Ipod i can scroll but the buttons work once every 50 times I press it, and no matter what way I press it, hard, light, medium, they just don't seem to want to work. it gets frustrating. If i want to change song, i have to press it repetitively, or if i want to go to the menu or if I want to even play a song!
if anyone knows why or knows what I can do, please email me - iverson_ballin3@hotmail.com

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 1/9/2008 2:19 PM Simone

Here's a new one for you...I read most of the comments and I have also had issues with my 4GB IPod Nano. I had times where it would have a fully charged battery, I'd plug it into my car charger for the IPod to play the music, I'd turn the dag on thing on, and lo-and-behold the freakin' thing froze. I would have to let the battery wear itself out, re-charge it only on the computer because the wall charger does ABSO-FREAKIN'-LUTELY NOTHING!, once it is re-charged, it would work. Well, here is what I have not read on any other comments and wonder who else has this problem...I synced my songs from iTunes onto my Ipod, for some reason, for me to have a 4GB unit, it shows I have 3.6 GB and 41.something MB was already used in the OTHER category (hmmm), so instead of being able to add 1,000 songs on my IPod, I can only fit 782 songs, not to mention, some of my favorite songs that I want to hear on a regular only plays snippetts...WHAT THE?!!!! I can't tell you how many times I reset the thing, restored, all of the 5 R's I did and nothing doing...a slew of the songs I added on the IPod would play between 1-10 seconds, and just when I start to groove to the beat...BAM!!!! it goes to the next song...eyyye yiii yiii!!!! "NOT WORTH IT I TELL YA!"

    ***********************************SOLUTION****************************
    I had the same problem.

The battery is so dead that it cannot start the charge procedure before it dies again. You need an external power supply.

Try plugging the USB into an XBOX, PS3, TIVO.
That should get it connected and charging. Let it charge for 10 minutes or so, then viola.

Plug it back into your comp and give it a FULL CHARGE.

    TRY IT!

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/5/2008 4:15 PM Peter Richterich

My daughter's iPod Nano 3G had become unresponsive - showed a "Connect to power" screen all the time. What was really confusing was that it showed the same message when it was actually plugged in!

    SOLUTION:
Just let it be plugged in for 10 minutes or so. I used a USB hub with an external power supply (cheaper than iPod chargers, and I had one handy anyway).

Apple's support web site actually mentions that the battery can be so empty that it takes 30 minutes of recharging before the iPod will be recognized by the computer.

Here are some tips to minimize battery problems:
    1. Don't use a computer that will go to sleep to recharge your iPod - recharging does not happen when the computer is asleep. Either don't let the computer sleep, or connect the iPod to a USB hub with a separate power adapter.
    2. Disconnect the iPod when it is fully charged.
    3. Keep your iPod warm and dry. Cold batteries have less power, and can confuse the battery management software. Sweat & rain can kill iPods.
    4. Let the iPod batteries drain completely once every month or two, and then recharge it fully.

Steps 2-4 are general rules for rechargeable batteries. In theory, they should not be needed with iPods and similar stuff - but in practice, they can make a big difference.

Yeah, Nanos are really great at getting broken. A virus, I guess, more like a song, caused mine to not charge. I hate the Nano

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/13/2008 7:02 PM JB

I just bought 2 Nanos 3G. 1 is 4gb and the other is 8gb. They have both frozen up, I haven't even gotten to listen to the music on the 8gb before it died and have only had a chance to use the 4gb for 5 days before this problem. Tried troubleshooting them exactly as directed to no avail. 8gb keeps blinking on and off and can't even be shut off...completely frozen and boy am I frustrated after buying "top of the line"...4gb is $150 and 8 gb is $200, plus tax!! Potential buyers BEWARE! Not all that glitters is gold! Returning tomorrow for basic MP3, which I know from previous experience will have better luck with!!!

My iPOD Nano screen turned white this morning and Itunes wouldn't acknowledge it-I tried flipping the hold switch back and forth and holding down menu but it didn't work-Finally I plugged it into the wall for a couple of hours then held down menu for ten seconds-The screen went black then the menu reappeared-We'll see how long it works for this time-

    # Must slide toggle back & forth each time to SHUT DOWN?? 3/16/2008 5:06 PM Ed /DonneTrav

Most recently I mistakenly disconnected the iPod Nano before the "Do Not Disconnect" went away. All 3,600 music files are still intact, but
launching iPodRip to further back-up files "suddenly quits" that app.
and the infamous continuing "BEACHBALL" appears and I must FORCE
QUIT each time?? Also, after disconnecting properly from computer,
have to slide the toggle switch back & forth to shut the iPod off.

Hello.. Im Briana.. i got an ipod 8-Gig 3rd gen for my bday... this was 3 months ago...

My ipod died last month... black screen,, not turning on,, itunes not acknowledging it.... left it for a few dayss,, tuned it on and it was fine...i expected i had "overcharged" it as it was fully charged when it died. It was fine for another month...

Then today i was listening to it all morning... Kmart, Coles doing my hair the usual stuff.. but at about 3.30pm went to plug it in,, and it was frozen on a song.. not playing, again itunes not realising it was there.. Again Fully charged.. Followed the 5 R's again nothing happened... I am going to leave it for a while,, see if the battery dies, so i can restart it... but its been an hour, the lights have not gone out and still frozen.. I HAVE TRIED TO RESTART IT WITH THE CENTER BUTTON ND THE LOCK THING.. BUT NOTHING WORKS!!! im intererested to see if other people have had this trouble??

if you have advice, this has happened to you or you suggest i ring/email/send my ipod back email me:
    brianab95@hotmail.com NO SPAM PLEASE!!

p.s i am sick of Apple,,, all my friend's have had something go wrong and mine twice... Bill Gates (owner or Apple--Ex Owner of Windows) has enough money,, why cant he put some of it into making quality products!!
    THE PEOPLE ARE FED UP!!!

My Ipod Nano was working fine the first 2 months when I got it as a gift from my aunt, she had no problems with it and niether did I. Until recently my Ipod started acting wierd, it would change and the battery would change from fully charged to almost dead in an instant. When I try to charge it the screen keeps changing from "connected" to "ejecting" back and forth. It's not my PC because when I charge my little brother's N Power (kid version of an Ipod) it works fine. If anyone has had this same problem please message me about it. Email paragasc@yahoo.com

Since my ipod is not conecting with itunes its stuck in disk-mode and everytime i go to re-set it, it goes to the apple screen then to a screen that says "Use itunes to restore", but i can not do that since the nothing shows up on i-tunes when i plug in the usb cord, what should i do so i can fix all of these problems????

Whats with the 4th Gen ipods and them changing the pin configuration so that the alpine cable no longer charges the IPOD if hooked to the car stereo? My Daughters 3rd Gen IPOD works great. I have to wonder if all those docking stations with built in speakers no longer charge while listening. How frustrating is it to spend a bunch of money on a product, try it out for a year, then decide to get another, only to be burned. My wife wanted to get me a nice car stereo addon for Christmas only to see my frustration and how I have charge it in the house every 3 days. The car stereo is the only place I wanted to use the ipod. She knows the only place I really listen to music is in the car while I'm driving.

My iPod Nano wasn't working, and so i tried a few things: i turned it onto HOLD and switched it back off. Then i had my thumb holding the MENU and the CENTRE circle for a few seconds. After which the apple symbol appeared and the screen lit up, and it was working again!!!
I hope this helps other frustrating ipod nano users

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/6/2009 10:06 AM adm

    READ:

Make sure you have the latest firmware.

Dont ever fucking pull the plug without disconnecting the device first.
This WILL damage the iPod. Just like any other hardware.
(Try to pull out you RAM while playing computer and see if it still works LOL)

iPod is NOT a Nokia 3310. Its a very compact mp3 player and the moist from warm sweaty hands can damage the hardware.

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 3/10/2009 4:39 PM Real Deal

Anything that Apple makes is absolute Garbage. Same thing with Motorola...just a waste of money time and time again. I don't understand why it takes half an hour to install the new Itunes when I have a pentium 4 3.06 Ghz. My Ipod always freezes or is unresponsive and possessed. Customer service at Apple or the Apple Store is worse than calling long-distance overseas. I would much rather eat a bullet than ever have anything in my Home or on my person with an Apple logo on it as of this moment forward. Hopefully Steve Jobs will get the hint and torch whatever is left of this ridiculous mess and use the shareholders money to buy some hair and a brain. It's no wonder Gates Screwed him because he knows his ideas are crap.

OKAY FOR ALL OF YOU FROZEN IPOD VICTEMS
APPLE IS WRONG TO SEND OUT IPOD NANOS LIKE THAT
BUT IF IT IS FROZEN 1.PUT IT ON A FLAT SURFACE 2.WHILE ON FLAT SURFACE PRESS MIDDLE BUTTON AND MENU AT THE SAME TIME UNTIL IT GOES OFF AND THEN IT WILL RESTART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    # re: Apple admits iPod Nano Problem 7/19/2009 6:20 AM James

To all those who have the 'skips songs' problem - I have an 8Gb iPod Nano and get this problem every now and again (perhaps once a fortnight).

Seems to be when I have listened to a song in Lossless or .Wav format then gone back to mp3.

Anyway, I have realised by messing around with it that the problem goes away each time when I choose a track which is in AAC Lossless format (or .Wav I think) and play it for a second then go back to the song I initially wanted. It then works fine without skipping. It's really strange but solves the problem. Hope this helps someone out :-)

I only just bought a 16gb 4th generation iPod YESTERDAY and it keeps resetting itself, on the computor, there is clearly some music on it, it was even kind enough to let me know that their was 76% memory left, but as soon as I safely remove it and unpulg it it resets itself and asks what language I want to use...EVERY TIME. With the price that they're selling these things, I would expect them to at least work, not internally shit itself when you ask it to do what it was created to!
