PDC05 - Jim Allchin Keynote Demos - SuperFetch and USB Memory Stick

Jim Allchin just did an amazing demo of Superfetch; Windows Vista memory optimization.  Think of a system that just gets slower over time.  Windows Vista optimizes system memory automatically. Some quick notes:

    • SuperFetch looks over time to optimize the system based on how a system has been used.
    • Running a script that opens applications without Superfetch running.  Applications open; slow startup, but things open.
    • Cold boot of the system using Windows Vista boot.
    • Start Superfetch and open the monitor.  This shows a graph of SuperFetch grabbing DLLs that you'd normally use (based on previous use).
    • Run the script again: applications open very rapidly.

Bonus: plug in USB memory stick and watch the Superfetch monitor.  Once the device is recognized, Windows Vista sees the USB as additional memory, immediately available to the system.
